Successful completion of the QQI Level 6 Manual Handling Instructor course and its assessments leads to the QQI Level 6 Manual Handling Instruction award. In line with the QQI award specification, the course equips learners with the knowledge, skills and competence to design and deliver effective manual handling instruction in the workplace. This is an instructor qualification; employees subsequently trained by the instructor receive a workplace training certificate, not a QQI Level 6 award.
Curriculum
Five days to confident, workplace-ready instruction
Over five days, participants progress from legislation, ergonomics and practical handling techniques to designing and delivering their own workplace training. The QQI learning outcomes are brought to life through realistic scenarios, current HSA risk assessment practice and structured teaching sessions with individual feedback.
- Current manual handling legislation and an integrated approach to managing risk
- Anatomy, back care and the principal risk factors associated with manual handling
- Ergonomic principles and practical manual handling risk assessment
- Selection and critical evaluation of controls and mechanical aids
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, supporting and putting down techniques
- Planning and designing workplace training, including lesson plans and learning materials
- Adult-learning principles, communication and group management
- Analysing learner performance and giving effective practical instruction
- Assessed teaching practice with detailed individual feedback

How long is the course?
The full course is delivered over 5 consecutive days at our Galway training centre or, by arrangement, at your premises. Theory, practical technique, training methodology and assessment are all covered.
Who is the course for?
Health and safety officers, occupational therapists and physiotherapists, training and HR managers, and anyone planning to deliver in-house manual handling training. We also train people setting up their own training practice.
What are the entry requirements?

How is the course assessed?
The programme includes theory, practical skills, lesson planning and assessed instruction. We confirm the current assessment format and award arrangements before enrolment.
What does the qualification let me do?
QQI defines the award as enabling the learner to design and deliver manual handling instruction for the workplace. HSA guidance says workplace manual handling training should be delivered by a person holding the relevant NFQ Level 6 Manual Handling Instruction award, or by someone otherwise able to demonstrate equivalent competence.
